The suspected Islamist attack would have involved a vehicle and guns with the aim of killing as many people as possible, according to the authorities.

In a statement, Frankfurt prosecutors said: “They are believed to have agreed to carry out an Islamist, terrorist attack using a vehicle and guns that would kill as many ‘non-believers’ as possible.”

The statement also added: “To prepare the attack, they had already made contact with different arms dealers, rented a large vehicle and collected financial assets to use for the purchase of guns and the execution of the planned murders.”

The main suspects include a 21-year-old and two 31-year-old brothers who are all associated with the local Islamist Salafist community, according to DW. They are all German citizens as well.

A police raid saw the authorities seize €20,000 in cash as well as several knives and electronic devices. Around 200 police officers are said to have taken part in the raids.

Hesse State Interior Minister, Peter Beuth, said: “Police intervened in a timely manner to prevent possible attack plans at an early stage.”
