The Defence Minister of Germany, Ursula von der Leyen, has become the latest to come out openly backing a full EU Army.
“Europe’s army is already taking shape”.They aren’t even trying to pretend otherwise anymore.
She claims that “Germany and France are the driving forces in defence”, “that 25 countries have joined forces in a security initiative we call Pesco” and “we’re moving even further ahead with our close partner France”. The Merkel-Macron alliance is still full steam ahead for deeper EU integration.
And she’s also keen to talk of the “potential Europe has to unify” and insists “this Europe must be able to defend itself”.
It is in stark contrast to the likes of Italy’s Matteo Salvini, who has pledged a “new spring” alongside Poland to oppose the “French-German axis”.
Nigel Farage recently claimed that those in Brussels have “launched a new Cold War against the United States of America”.
This underlines why the UK is right to be exiting the European Union – though must do so in a way that does not “place control of aspects of our national security in foreign hands ” as the former head of MI6 has warned.
