The Labour MP for Brent Central Dawn Butler has opted to close her office in her constituency after she received threats against her and staff which “dramatically escalated”.
Ms Butler MP has said that bricks have been thrown through the windows of her office and that staff have been attacked inside. In an open letter, the reasons given for this decision were a “continual security risk” coupled with spiralling rent costs on the office that has been operational since 2015.
Ms Butler MP said: “I continue to receive on an almost daily basis threats of violence and death threats. My staff have been attacked in the office, verbally assaulted coming and going from work, bricks have been thrown through the windows and the frontage has been smashed. I have had to work extensively with police and security staff to simply try and create a safe working environment for my employees. Many of these incidents were not made public in order to not encourage copycat attacks”.
UNN’s Oliver Down understands that the police have arrested one person in connection with these activities and are actively pursuing others.
