The Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police has told Londoners and her own officers alike that her force “is not free of discrimination, racism or bias” and that any officer deemed racist will be sacked. In addition to this, Dame Cressida Dick has placed on record that the Metropolitan Police will “strain every sinew” to hit a target for 40 per cent of new recruits to be from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds (BAME) by 2022.
These developments come after the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan published an action plan regarding the use of police powers in relation to black Londoners. This report includes sections on stop and search and the use of a taser. Mayor Khan’s action plan has called for an immediate review of police road traffic stops in the capital and has asked for a year-long pilot scheme looking at samples to identify any disproportionality relating to ethnicity.
Dame Cressida Dick has reacted to Mayor Khan’s plan by saying the Met is working with Mr Khan and agrees with 98% of his plan. She said, “I think it’s good for London and Londoners that the police service reflects and understands London”.
She went on to say: “There are over 40,000 people in the Metropolitan Police Service, and I have always said we are not free of racism, we are not free of bias or discrimination. I know there is more for us to do to gain the confidence of all of our communities. I want all of our communities to trust the Met, I want the Met to be the most trusted police service in the world. Officers that display racism are sacked. That’s what we do and quite right too”.
