Orange Hall in Springburn deliberately attacked and set on fire in broad daylight

Police have launched an appeal for information after a blaze at an Orange Hall in the Springburn area of Glasgow, authorities are treating the incident as a deliberate arson attack.

Emergency services rushed to scene at Millarbank Street Orange Halls off Keppochhill Road around 7.45pm last night, following reports the side wall of the hall had been set alight.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire, however, it highlights some of the growing concerns Unionists in Scotland have about their religious and cultural institutions being attacked.

Last year loyalist groups classed with republican protesters in Glasgow as they attempted to march through staunch unionist areas in Glasgow riots erupted with both sides coming to blows and vast numbers of riot police being deployed on the streets.

Enquiries are ongoing, with detectives appealing to anyone with information that may assist their investigation, or anyone driving on Keppochhill Road around that time with dash-cam footage to contact them.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 7.23pm on Sunday, May 10 to reports of a fire in the open in the Springburn area of Glasgow.

“Operations Control mobilised three appliances to the city’s Millarbank Street, where firefighters extinguished a fire which had started next to a building.

“Crews left the scene after working to make the area safe.

“There were no casualties.”

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “Around 7.45pm on Sunday, 10 May, police were called to a report of a fire in Keppochhill Road, Glasgow. No one was injured and officers are treating the fire as wilful.

“Enquiries are continuing and detectives are appealing to anyone with information that may assist their investigation, or anyone driving on Keppochhill Road around that time with dash-cam footage to contact them.

“Information can be passed to Maryhill Police Office through 101 quoting reference number 2993 of 11th May. Alternatively Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.”
