Terror attacks at New Zealand mosques leave 49 dead

nz2 e1552641647541

Nearly 50 people have been confirmed dead after two horrifying terror attacks at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand.

At least 49 people have been killed and a further 20 injured after attacks against Muslims at mosques, with at least one of the attacks having been recorded by the terrorist. Automatic weapons appear to have been used.

One witness who was at the Al Noor mosque told TV New Zealand that: “What I did was basically just waiting and praying, God please, let this guy run out of bullets.

“He came to this side, he shot this side, he went to another room and went to the ladies’ section and shot them. I just heard one of the ladies has died.”

An alleged gunman is said to be Australian and has been arrested. Australia’s Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, described him as an “extremist, right-wing” terrorist.

New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, has said: What has happened in Christchurch is an extraordinary act of unprecedented violence. It has no place in New Zealand. Many of those affected will be members of our migrant communities – New Zealand is their home – they are us.

“The person who has committed this violent act has no place here. To those in Christchurch; I encourage you to stay inside and follow the instructions of New Zealand Police.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has responded by announcing that there will be “highly visible policing” around mosques today to protect worshippers.
