Vegan Organisation Finds Australian Men Would Rather Die Than Give Up Meat

A survey commissioned by No Meat May, an Australian non-profit organisation advocating veganism, has found that almost three-quarters of men would choose to die ten years early rather than give up meat; a revelation the organisation put down to “gender stereotypes.”

The poll, which questioned 1,000 respondents, found 73 per cent of men would rather cut their life expectancy by ten years than remove meat from their diets. In a follow-up, 47 per cent of respondents said they viewed the consumption of meat as an explicitly “masculine undertaking.”

No Meat May co-founder, Ryan Alexander, commented on the results:

“What was perhaps most shocking, was that 73 percent of male respondents said they’d rather reduce their life expectancy by up to 10 years than give up eating meat, with three-quarters of men not convinced of the health benefits of a meat-free diet, despite the mounting evidence to the contrary. Our survey alarmingly shows that Australian men are either not aware of any of these facts, don’t believe them, or simply don’t care.”

As reported by Pink News, No Meat May is hoping to change the ‘stigma’ around meat-eating and encourages people to give up meat for a month to combat climate change, global food scarcity, health problems and animal cruelty. Continuing, Alexander blamed “damaging gender stereotypes” for the results of the survey and called for a rejection of “outdated” ideas around food. He added:

“It’s never been easier to give up meat and whether you’re giving up for a month, or looking to make a long-term change, No Meat May is here to provide that safe stepping-stone, evidence-based information and a tonne of food inspiration to help you along the way.”
